Hibridalab Recognized by CECA for Its Innovative Approach
The Spanish Confederation of Savings Banks (CECA) has awarded Fundación Vital Fundazioa the second prize in the Education and Research category for the project “Hibridalab: Open Innovation and Creative Transfer Center of Álava.” This prestigious recognition, presented at the 19th edition of the CECA Awards, highlights Hibridalab’s impact as a leading example of innovation and creativity. The ceremony, held today in Madrid, was attended by Gotzon Azkarraga, president of Hibridalab and trustee of Fundación Vital Fundazioa, who received the award on behalf of the organization.
Hibridalab’s Christmas Toast: A Celebration of Growth and Success
Yesterday, Hibridalab hosted its annual Christmas toast, bringing together friends and collaborators in an intimate gathering. This third edition of the event celebrated the community’s journey from its launch in October 2022 to its ongoing consolidation in 2025. The evening was a reflection on a year filled with learning, accomplishments, and the anticipation of even greater milestones ahead. Though some familiar faces were missed, the atmosphere was imbued with gratitude and connection. A heartfelt thank you to everyone and every organization that continues to make this inspiring project a reality!
Citizen Innovation Labs at Hibridalab
Last week, we hosted the first of two sessions focused on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These global objectives aim to eradicate poverty, reduce inequalities, and protect the planet, but achieving them requires both individual and collective action.
With insights from Roberto San Salvador del Valle, we explored ways to activate citizens and align personal and collective agendas with global challenges. Hibridalab’s director, Miren Martín, led participatory dynamics to identify key actions and priorities for 2025.
The second session will take place on December 10, with a special focus on engaging youth. We remain committed to building a more sustainable future!

Galdera_Ekinn is Hibridalab’s pioneering program aimed at bringing together Basque companies and organizations that want to promote open and collaborative innovation in their activities, detecting more disruptive innovation through new questions. At Hibridalab, we strive to offer services that add value to companies, helping them make decisions and serving as inspiration to conceptualize and implement innovative projects, both individually and in collaboration with others.

Jazz for Innovation by Hibridalab, the series of conference-concerts with music professionals, is returning as part of the Vitoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival. These events, which will take place on July 16, 17, 18, and 19 at Hibridalab, are designed to explore the intersection between musical creativity and business and organizational innovation. Renowned jazz musician Baldo Martínez will open the series with the conference Imaginary Music: From Idea to Production, and will give an exclusive presentation of his latest album: Imaginary Music. Unveiling the Symphony of the Mind: Exploring Cognition through Electroencephalography
Think of the #brain as if it were a symphony orchestra where each neuron plays its instrument in harmony to create a melody. The #electroencephalogram (EEG) allows us to hear that brain melody by capturing the electrical waves generated by neurons as we think, feel, and act. All of this is recorded to be interpreted later and applied to various practices that go beyond the scientific world, as explained yesterday by members of NIT — Neural Interface Technologies, Manuela Ruzzoli (BCBL) and Egoitz Aulestia, in the workshop: “Our Mind Uncovered: Cognition through Electroencephalography”.
Successful First Test of the Open-Source and Low-Cost 3D Bioprinter, #Open3Dbio
On Tuesday, we successfully conducted the first test of our open-source and low-cost 3D bioprinter, #Open3Dbio. This pioneering project aims to democratize access to this revolutionary technology. The event featured an outstanding team: the girls from #MaddModa; the artist #AnttonMGoikoetxea; the New Media Artist Oriol Pares; members of the msrker community from #Fablab, Mikel Latorre and Matías Díaz Díaz, and the #FabManager of Hibridalab, Enrique Garcia (Mr.Q).
Mercedes Hausmann gives us the keys to creating hyper-realistic images in the MidJourney workshop
MidJourney is gaining more and more followers, and it’s not hard to see why. With its advanced capabilities and intuitive interface, this program allows users of all experience levels to produce high-quality images with unprecedented speed and precision. The workshop that Mercedes Hausmann offered last Saturday not only demonstrated the creative potential of MidJourney but also inspired participants to experiment and expand their artistic boundaries using this innovative tool.

Yesterday, Hibridalab hosted the presentation of the fourth edition of the Apika Audiovisual Project Lab, a support program aimed at optimizing the development of audiovisual projects in Euskadi.
The press conference featured the participation of María Nanclares Caballero, Councilor for Economic Promotion, Employment, Commerce, Tourism, and Euskera of Vitoria-Gasteiz; Saray Zarate, Provincial Deputy for Economic Development and Innovation; Arantxa Ibañez de Opacua, Director of Fundación Vital Fundazioa; Mar Izquierdo, Coordinator of Zineuskadi; and Maite Ruiz de Austri, President of Apika.
Workshop: Image Generation using AI (Midjourney) with Mercedes Hausmann
Discover the world of image generation using artificial intelligence in this workshop held by Mercedes Hausmann that will take place on Saturday 15th June in an intensive day divided into two blocks: from 10am to 2pm and from 4pm to 8pm.
This workshop, which fuses theory with practice, will provide participants with the knowledge they need to get started the Midjourney programme.
Transformation Spaces Conference with Maider López
Artist Maider López will share her research on intervening in public spaces and architecture, giving us a summary of her work, in which everyday actions and common realities are questioned; at a new edition of Creative Conferences for Innovation, where professionals from diverse fields, ranging from art and design to technology and the business sector, come to give inspiring talks on the avant-garde approaches and multidisciplinary methodologies they apply in their creative processes.
Urban spaces and natural landscapes are taken out of context through strategies that alter habits and relationships, generating new spaces or situations. Projects that offer an opportunity to see a place differently by altering its dynamics of use and the perception of space, enabling other ways of observing and rethinking our environment.
Jon Astorquiza: “If there is one thing that differentiates us from machines and artificial intelligence (AI), it is our ability to emote and create emotions, and what better way than through art?”
“If there is one thing that differentiates us from machines and artificial intelligence (AI), it is our ability to emote and create emotions, and what better way than through art?”, pondered Jon Astorquiza del Val, founder of ElektrART, in his conference at yesterday at entitled ‘Where Art Meets Technology’.
During the event, Astorquiza highlighted how the analogue generation has adapted to our hyper-connected society and, in this regard, he mentioned ‘Hyper-Reality’ by the Japanese director Keiichi Matsuda, who in 2006 foresaw a hyper-connected future, pointing out the fact that technology not only improves our quality of life but can also dehumanise us. “We buy plots in the Metaverse with no clear purpose, and spend hours on our smartphones, sacrificing our privacy and allowing companies to use our data for their own benefit”.
We must not forget that technology has always been a tool for artists, who have innovated in many ways, ranging from the first reproduction of the image to the digital era, gradually breaking away from the tendency to sacralise traditional concepts of what constitutes a work of art, resulting in the appearance of new creative formats and even efforts to resolve social problems using creativity. He gave the example of projects such as that Eduardo Miranda, who, by combining biotechnology and art, uses living brain cells in Petri dishes to create music by means of electromagnetic impulses; or that of designer Behnaz Farahi, who, inspired by the Iranian masks worn by Bandari women in the Persian Gulf, has created masks with built-in sensors that allow women who are forced to cover their faces to communicate in secret.
Currently, ElektrART is working on the project #OspitaleART, which seeks to improve the well-being of patients in hospitals through contemplative and interactive audiovisual digital art installations. In recent years, they have also developed immersive installations to turn urban spaces into spaces of relaxation, as is the case of #Enigma at the Euskalduna Bilbao; recovering the heritage left by our industrial past using lighting and sound in the foundries in Sestao known as the ‘Hornos’, they have also broken barriers on stage by hybridising sound and visuals at the Loraldia Festival.
José María Lasalle presents his latest book, Artificial Civilization, at Hibridalab
On Thursday 30th May at 7pm, former politician, José María Lasalle, will be presenting his latest book Artificial Civilization at the Hibridalab facilities. Known for his insight and clarity of analysis, he takes us on a journey into the future of humanity in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). Admission to the event is free with prior registration.
In Artificial Civilization he offers an incisive and hopeful vision of the impact of AI on our society. From the utopian dream of being able to mimic the human brain to the breakneck acceleration of artificial intelligence, Lasalle explores the cultural, geopolitical and philosophical consequences of this phenomenon.
How will AI transform our world and what does it mean for humanity? Are we prepared to face the risks and seize the opportunities it brings? Will we keep control over AI that is designed to surpass our cognitive capabilities? Or, on the contrary, do we run the risk of becoming mere bystanders in an cyberocracy where humankind loses its central position? These are some of the questions the author will put on the table during the event at which, beyond his book, he will discuss the challenge presented by technological nihilism and the growing presence of AI in our lives.
GazteLab Summer Camps: Explore the future of technology!
Hibridalab’s GazteLab is back. This introductory robotics course is aimed at boys and girls aged between 10 and 14, and will be held at the our centre’s Fablab in the morning, from 9:30am to 1:30pm, on three different occasions (from 24th to 28th June, from 1st to 5th July, and from 8th to 12th July), each lasting five days. Each participant will be given the opportunity to build their own robot using a robotics kit and the machines and tools available at the Fablab, such as 3D printers, laser cutters and milling machines.

Workshop on innovation with the UPV/EHU’s Faculty of Arts
On Monday 13th May, we will be visited by students from the UPV/EHU’s Faculty of Arts in Álava. This meeting, which is part of the Hibridalab Workshop programme, falls under the European Union’s ENLIGHT programme.
ENLIGHT is an alliance of nine European universities created with the aim of contributing to the transformation of higher education in Europe by providing students, teaching staff and researchers with the means to obtain cutting-edge knowledge, skills and innovation potential, preparing them for the major social challenges that lie ahead, as well as to promote fair and sustainable living.
The UPV/EHU is one of the institutions that form part of this project, and with whom we have organised this meeting where, among other topics, we will explain how Hibridalab takes a cultural approach to economy.
Give your faulty devices a second life on Wednesdays at Repair Café
Like every Wednesday, we opened Hibridalab’s Fablab to another day of Repair Café an initiative that supports the circular economy by teaching us how to repair objects instead of throwing them away.
With the help of experts Mr. Q. and Patxi Aloa, attendees were able to demonstrate their manual skills while giving new life to defective appliances and forgotten furniture. This event not only offers a practical way to reducing waste, but also fosters a sense of community and collaboration, showing how, together, we can make a difference in the fight against over-consumption and waste generation.

In the 1960s, Marschall Rosenberg coined the term non-violent communication to refer to an approach to communication that helps people resolve conflicts in a positive and peaceful way an exercise that involves replacing patterns of responding to other people’s judgements or criticisms not with an attack or defensiveness, but with empathy. All of this helps us to view our intentions and relationships differently.
At the Hibridalab Innovation Book Club we are analysing his book of the same name. In each session, we learn about, explore, question and debate different ideas from the book.

Lecture: Where Art Meets Technology by Jon Astorquiza
The lecture by Jon Astorquiza, renowned multimedia artist and founder of ElektrART, is a deep dive into the crossover between art and technology.
Astorquiza will share his creative perspective and vast experience as a leader in cultural projects, on Tuesday 14th May at 7pm. His influence on the cultural scene is remarkable, fusing art, science and technology in an innovative way. As a multidisciplinary artist, he stands out for his exploration of new forms of expression and the integration of emerging technologies. Además de dirigir proyectos culturales y liderar ElektrART, Jon ha contribuido significativamente al diálogo en torno a la evolución del arte en la era digital.
During his speech he will talk about the importance of creative talent, mainly in the technical and scientific fields, and how artists are called to solve the problems and challenges of the future and of our planet. All this always through the union between art and technology. He will analyze international references and present some of the projects he has worked on related to digital art and ephemeral light and sound installations. He will close the meeting by presenting the OspitaleART project in which they are working to improve the quality of life of patients in hospital care through digital art and interactive art.

Xavier Marcet visits Hibridalab to talk about Seriously Innovating

On Monday 13th May at 6pm, Xavier Marcet, a national icon in strategy, innovation and entrepreneurship, will visit us to give a conference entitled Innovar en serio (Seriously Innovating). He has written articles for numerous media outlets and is the author of books such as Esquivar la mediocridad (Dodging Mediocrity), in which he discusses the various factors that can lead a company to mediocrity, and applauds those who take risks with their projects, their money or their career; and Grow Growing Others, the Secret to Consistent Companies,which contains a selection of his articles familiarising us with the challenges of management today. Marcet is a firm believer that things happen when we take them seriously, we take care of the margins of each operation as well as the customer, we are committed to environmental sustainability as a business model, and we diversify from traditional business to added value. After the meeting we will present Hibridalab’s latest project, the Club for Companies that Innovate.

Hibridalab and the UPV/EHU in Álava sign a collaboration agreement
In April, Hibridalab signed a framework agreement for collaboration with the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) with the aim of promoting entrepreneurship and the creation of science and technology-based companies at the Álava Campus.
This agreement will enable various lines of action, including: the organisation of meetings, conferences and training courses to support business initiatives; the search for and analysis of ideas and areas of knowledge for business development, starting with the university setting (research groups and/or institutes, departments, centres, etc.); collaboration in assessment and technological tutoring for business endeavours that are put forward, with advice from the Fabmanager on new technologies for the use with the Fablab machinery for the creation of non-commercial prototypes; the provision of infrastructures and/or spaces to carry out the agreed actions; as well as the search for and management of funding to develop the scheduled activities, and so on.
This agreement is soon to be followed by others in collaboration with a number of educational entities and professional associations.

Call for International Residencies for artists and professionals in the cultural sector
Hibridalab has been selected in the Culture Moves Europe program, part of Creative Europe, for the development of the International Residencies 2024. Within this framework, the Center for Open Innovation and Creative Transfer of Alava, Hibridalab, opens the Call for International Residencies 2024 aimed at artists and professionals in the cultural sector who wish to develop projects that explore how digitization influences, shapes and redefines both individual and collective identities. It also offers a unique opportunity to the business sector in Alava by promoting international collaborations and cultural exchange.
The program offers participants the opportunity to develop their projects in a collaborative environment, such as Hibridalab, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration where professionals from different areas can interact, share knowledge and work together. It seeks, in turn, to boost local talent, acting as a bridge for the exchange of knowledge and the transfer of skills; the promotion of cultural tourism, benefiting local companies in sectors such as hospitality, retail and tourism services; and support for cultural digitization. Hibridalab thus supports Álava’s commitment to innovation and adaptation to technological changes in the cultural sector.
The residencies will be held from September 10 to December 12, 2024. A maximum of five artists and/or cultural professionals will be selected from the 40 countries participating in the European Commission’s Creative Europe Program.
Eligible disciplines are: Visual Arts, Digital Arts and Performing Arts.

Maker date at a new WineWorker meeting
On Wednesday, April 17, we received the professionals of the Maker sector in a new meeting of the networking cycle, WineWorking. During the tour they were able to visit the facilities of the Fablab guided by Mr.Q who, in addition to explaining to them the benefits of being member and introduce them to the machinery we have; he gave them a small preview with the latest news about the prototype of the low cost open source 3D BioPrinter, Open3Dbiowhich he is working on in collaboration with his colleague from the Lascaray Research Center, Denis Scaini. This will allow small laboratories and research groups to access this technology and experiment with it.

The Provincial Council presents new tax incentives for audio-visual production, live performing arts and music at Hibridalab
Last Wednesday, April 17, the Provincial Council of Alava convened representatives of the Basque audiovisual sector at the Hibridalab facilities to present the details of the new tax incentives for audiovisual production, live performing arts and music for the 2024 fiscal year.
As explained at the meeting, the provincial regulation proposes both to improve the system of deductions on the cost of production, copies, advertising and promotion of films (both national and foreign) and to incorporate new deductions for the performing and musical arts and book publishing.
Dynamic visit of the IA exhibition, C: Reloaded, with students of the Bachiller Artistic of the IES Federico Baraibar.
Students of Bachiller Artistic of IES Federico Baraibar have participated in a dynamic visit offered by the Hibridalab programmers of the exhibition of the Basque artist, Laura MM, C: Reloaded. El punto justo del Conflicto Cognitivo.
The work is an interactive installation that employs artificial intelligence (AI) systems and generative software to explore AI technologies, and will be on display through July 31 at Hibridalab.
On Thursdays, until July 25, we offer free dynamic visits to the exhibition installation by the Hibridalab team. An environment for the exchange of ideas and collaborative learning in which the audience becomes an integral part of the creative process and artistic interpretation.
These meetings are open to the general public and are complemented by the new Educational Program with which we want to encourage young people to get closer to the arts and sciences.

Last Wednesday, April 10th, we had the honor of welcoming Sonia Estévez, director of the short film Txotxongiloa, nominated for the Goya Awards for Best Animated Short Film 2024, to talk to us about the art of Stop Motion.
A form of animation that, as he pointed out, allows us to give soul to animated creations and create captivating stories and endearing characters through the careful manipulation of objects and figures in each frame.

Josu Izarra, professional photographer and recent winner of the award of the Spanish Federation of Photography and Image Professionals (FEPFI) has been the second guest in our cycle of conferences “Creative Processes for Innovation”.
The lecture “Photography in the age of Artificial Intelligence” explored the convergence between photography and AI, revealing how he has integrated this technology into his creative process.
3D BIOPRINTER PROTOTYPE
Project Open3Dbio
The development of “Open3dBio”, the prototype of the low-cost open source 3D bioprinter, continues to progress. One of the key parts of this project is the design, manufacture and programming of the extrusion head of the 3D Bio-Printer to ensure precision, versatility and efficiency in the controlled deposition of biomaterials. This project is supported by the Ksigune Conexiones Call for Proposals, a program promoted by the Basque Government’s Department of Culture and Language Policy.

On March 5, Hibridalab successfully held the “Women who Innovate” workshop, a dynamic and reflective day that brought together women innovators from various sectors to address the complexities and challenges they face in the workplace.
The workshop, open to all citizens, was attended by women who have collaborated with Hibridalab since its inception, who shared their experiences and perspectives in an atmosphere of dialogue and mutual learning.

Dance and technology
Digital programming experts Jemima Cano and Iker Pomposo have been in charge of opening the first cycle of conferences on the phases involved in the creative processes. Their presentation was entitled “Dance and technology: Exploring creative frontiers”, and they recounted their experiences in integrating these two disciplines, as well as other arts, with technological innovation.
GAZTELAB – ROBOTIC CHRISTMAS
Christmas edition of Initiation to Robotics held
The Christmas edition of GazteLab, the robotics workshop aimed at young people between 9 and 14 years old, has been carried out with great success of participation. In four days, the participants have designed, programmed and manufactured, together with Enrique Garcia (aka Mr.Q.), scientist, engineer and FabLab Manager of Hibridalab, their own robot, which incorporates an Arduino board.

Sustainable Mobility edition completed
On November 27th, the presentation of the results of the research carried out in the Citizen Innovation Labs took place, whose theme revolved around Behavioral Economics. These laboratories are supported by the Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council and are promoted by Hibridalab.
